Prescription Drug Detox
The experience of detoxifying the prescription drug user is no different from what any drug addict will go through. Under medical supervision, the addict’s body releases the toxins and chemical compounds that have built up in his or her internal organs (even prescription medications contain toxic ingredients). Medication is sometimes used to offset the patient’s discomfort. Detox can last from 24 hours to several days.

Once detox is over, however, the addict is still an addict. The psychological and physical cravings are still just as strong as before. Detox is very important, but in itself, it is not “treatment.”

Prescription Drug Treatment
After the short detox period, the patient becomes involved in the ongoing process of his or her own recovery: deconstructing the components of those physical and psychological cravings.

In treatment—whether on an inpatient or outpatient basis— individuals participate in group and one-on-one counseling, family therapy, and workshops where relapse prevention, coping and stress-management skills are taught. Virtually every treatment program in the country also incorporates the 12 Step model of recovery, originally developed and used in Alcoholics Anonymous.

Some treatment centers offer enhanced facilities, often referred to as a “VIP program” or “Executive Treatment.” Given that prescription medications don’t carry the same stigma as other drugs, it is not surprising that a large number of prescription drug addicts are in the upper echelons of society and business.
